Choosing a good inspector can be very difficult. There are many people with no experience in the building industry who are portraying themselves as professional home inspectors. A home inspection is not something to rush into, it requires someone who has a back ground in building or at least a building trade, has educated himself to be able to provide the skills to protect your investment and they must also be able to educate the most inexperienced of clients. An educated consumer is the best consumer. Always ask for references and verify that your "home inspector" has some background to qualify him to be your home inspector. I watched a video of a local home inspector who states that a home inspector should not quote "Ontario Building Codes"! This may be true if you have no knowledge of them, the part time courses unfortunately only give a rudimentary basics of the building envelope and structural building codes. Ensure you have someone who can base their findings on something reliable like the Ontario Building Codes versus just guessing, espressing their feelings or making vague statements that have no basis in fact. Remember "Caveat Emptor", Buyer Beware.....ask questions!
